Beginner Photography Class

I am pleased to announce that I have been accepted, along with 12 other artists, into the first round of Ann Kullberg’s SOAR teacher training course.  When I complete the 10 week course, I will be a certified SOAR instructor, and Ann Kullberg will be flying me across the U.S. and Canada to instruct, inspire, and empower colored pencil enthusiasts through colored pencil workshops using my own techniques and projects.  Here is where you will find out the “when and where” for SOAR workshops:

I will be putting a pause button on my private photography class for an indeterminate amount of time to fully focus on SOAR.  I will post here about any future classes, along with workshops I’ll be doing through the SOAR network of teachers…hopefully in a city near you!

The Beginner Photography Class is for homeschooled preteens and teens who love photography and want to improve their knowledge and skill.  While this class is considered a beginner photography course, it is still quite technical in nature and moves at a quick pace.  This class will teach students how to photograph using natural light.  The first two classes will be covering topics like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, shooting in manual mode, composition, photographing single persons, and more!  There will be time each class to also practice taking pictures.  The last two sessions will focus heavily on basic editing in Lightroom, Photoshop, and GIMP.  Students will have ample opportunity to ask questions and get immediate feedback and tips as they explore photography.  Most importantly, they will have fun doing it!  This class will not have a manual, but handouts and cheat sheets are included in the class fee.  A DSLR camera is required to take this class.  No point and shoot cameras or phone cameras are permitted.  DSLR’s can be any brand (Canon, Nikon, etc.).

Course Fee: $100

Each class will be 2.5 hours long and will last for 4 weeks on Friday mornings from 9:30am to 12:00pm.  There may be some travel to different local locations to practice taking pictures (2nd and 3rd classes only).  As a result, there will be a waiver for parents to sign on the first class to allow me or another parent of a child in the class to drive your child.

While this class will focus on photographing more than just people, here is a sampling of portrait photography that I have taken throughout the years:

Students will also learn how to edit their images and problem solve for scenarios such as the below:
